Now B Gata H Kei is a anime show that I found a few weeks ago on Myanimelist.com from browsing out of sheer boredom and it is a pretty good comedy anime series that really surprised me considering I thought it would be another run of the mill anime show about a relationship, of which there are a whole lot of by the way in that genre but B Gata H Kei is rather inventive with how said relationship begins…..lewd but inventive none the less.
So B Gata H Kei started as a four-panel, 9 volume manga series made by Yoko Sanri and it was published by Shueisha and ran in Weekly Young Jump from 2004-2011 and was then adapted into 12 episode anime which began on April 2rd, 2010 to June 18th of the same year and it is about a 15 year old school girl named Yamada and well let’s just say Yamada isn’t your usual anime heroine and I will explain why in a minute.
This is a ecchi, romance, comedy show and the premise of B Gata H Kei is about Yamada wanting to lose her virginity so she can have 100 sexual partners in high school and no I am NOT joking that is the premise of the entire show….she wants to get laid, alot and that’s it but that proves to be far more troublesome than she bargained for, here is the trailer but just so you know it is dubbed in English because I couldn’t find the subbed version.
The characters in B Gata H Kei are all likable in their own ways but I will begin with the two lead characters starting with the show’s heroine Yamada because she is the easiest to explain because she has a one track mind and I can read her like a open book.
Yamada is a pretty, smart and normal looking girl but she is extremely inappropriate and a huge pervert, she highlights sexual terms in the dictionary, collects porn magazines (which she keeps under her bed under lock and key) and is constantly thinking about sex but regardless of her imagination she is a virgin and she has somewhat of a wierd complex about her lady parts that makes her insecure and has lead her to reject every guy that attempts to make a move on her.
So in order to rid herself of her complex and her maidenhood so she can start her conquest, she decides the best course of action is to find another virgin to help “pop her cherry” (those are her words not mine by the way) which she finds in the unsuspecting form of Takashi Kosuda, a male classmate who is also a virgin and she finds herself only pursuing him and that is when hilarity strikes but now on to Kosuda.
Perceived by Yamada and their fellow classmates as being “plain and ordinary” Takashi is the polar opposite to Yamada in every possible way imaginable, he is a innocent guy but oddly likable despite being completely “normal” and he is 100% oblivious of Yamada’s quest to make him her first and when Yamada makes advances on him, he becomes confused and anxious because of her unusual and perverted behavior but over the course of the show he begins to develop genuine feelings for her even though he is confused by her mixed signals.
The other characters in B Gata H Kei are also pretty likable with my favorite supporting character being Mayu Miyano who is a childhood friend of Takashi’s, she is a innocent and kind girl that likes to cook and has feelings for Takashi but doesn’t know how to act on them, then there is Miharu Takeshita who is a friend of Yamada’s that tries to keep her perverted nature under control but failing most of the time to do so but I think it’s time to move on to other things about the show.
What’s makes B Gata H Kei funny is that while Yamada might talk a big game and states she knows everything, she is in fact a clueless tsundere that fails at every possible opportunity to actually seduce Takashi and it gets worse when other girls like Takashi’s well endowed childhood friend are brought into the picture leading her to act jealous and become somewhat territorial over him even though she states that she only wants to have sex with him.
Another thing I find humorous is how oblivious Takashi is to Yamada’s countless failed attempts at wooing him and it’s this miscommunication that makes this series funny on top of Yamada’s lewd behavior but it’s easier to understand after you watch the show and read the manga (which I am currently reading)
Moving on from humor the show is rather good quality wise, the characters look a bit different in the anime when compared to their manga counter parts but it isn’t that big of a deal in my book because the characters are really well drawn and animated which you will see with Yamada’s constantly changing expression.
B Gata H Kei is subbed in English along with a dubbed version and both of them are good, although I have to admit Yamada sounds incredibly desperate in the English dub at times while in the sub she sounds more comedic and that is my only complaint with the show along with another thing I will get into in a minute.
Now where does B Gata H Kei fall short exactly, well boys and girls that would be the show’s length and that is my only complaint, at a reasonable 12 episodes it does draw you in but then you reach episode 12 and are left looking towards the manga to find out what happens to Yamada and Kosuda after the show ends but it isn’t too bad since you can find the manga anywhere translated online.
There isn’t really much I can say about B Gata H Kei other than it is a criminally underrated anime, the description the show gives on sites really makes it sound like some hentai series with Yamada wanting to lose her virgin status and all but that could be further from the truth, B Gata H Kei is a unique romantic anime series that has a odd plot and premise and once you get past the first episode it becomes a great series that you can watch over one weekend and the manga is complete so you have about 220 chapters of Yamada being Yamada and Kosuda being oblivious.
I encourage you to check this anime series out because it’s pretty if you want something filled with perverted humor, double meanings and a great love story and with that I am done I suppose so please leave a like, comment down below in the comments section and share so other people can read and I will see you next time.
